Henson Associates Presents:

Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Motocross

This racing game was based on the 1977 Muppet TV special "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas." Unfortunately, it came out way, way after the special aired (1982), and ended up being over-shadowed by a slew of other Muppet-themed games, like The Swedish Chef's Smorgasbord Time and Bert's WWI Pigeon Messenger.

Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Motocross

Characters from the special raced across the endless frozen swamp of Frogtown Hollow in various vehicles competing for the prize money in order to feed their starving families. The way your family becomes crushed and despondent if you lose was an inspired piece of game design, as were bonus items you could pick up, like persimmons and crusts of bread.

Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Motocross was also notable for being one of the first video games to let you select your character, but due to a programming oversight, if you didn't choose Emmet, you would see your character also racing against you in the game. And since the game was first person POV anyway, you couldn't actually SEE what character you were, making the whole issue confusingly moot. However, if you play as the badass bear from The Nightmare, you can actually run over the other characters instead of just knocking them off the road. Sweet.
